Carers group visit Belfast Tall Ships

Carers group visit Belfast Tall Ships

Over 30 carers and their dependents enjoyed a trip of a life time to the Tall Ships event in Belfast last week as part of The Ely Centre’s carers project, SACRED.

SACRED, (Support and Active Carer Respite for Excluded Dependents), a project funded under the European Union’s PEACE III Programme and managed on behalf of the Special EU Programmes Body by the Community Relations Council and POBAL Consortium, provides respite for carers of victims and survivors of the troubles.

Visiting the Tall Ships festival on its second day, the group had the opportunity to view the magnificent vessels from Belfast docks, with a lucky few managing to get a closer look by boarding a number of the ships.

As well as taking in the Tall Ships berthed in the docks area, people enjoyed the festival around the docks and Odyssey area which included a continental market, street theatre, market stalls, live music and a funfair.

Speaking about the day, SACRED Respite Coordinator, Tracy Armstrong, said:

“Our group of carers and their dependents thoroughly enjoyed their day. The Tall Ships were a spectacle to be seen and the carnival activities added to the atmosphere of the day.

“The Tall Ships only come to Belfast once in a blue moon so we are grateful to the European Union’s PEACE III Programme for enabling our carers and the people they care for to visit such a momentous event and have a great day out.”
